The sound of music filled the air. I had to confess that the two brothers on stage were doing a magnificent job. So much so that I slid out of my seat and held my hand out to Zoe, “Dance with me.”
“What? Here?” Her eyes widened while she looked around before hesitantly meeting my gaze. “No one else is dancing.”
I never took my eyes off her as I spoke, “Doesn’t mean we can’t.”
She looked at my outstretched hand and then at the table. Reaching forward, she took a napkin and dabbed the corners of her mouth before slowly rising to her feet. Wordlessly, she placed her hand in mine, allowing me to pull her close.
With her free hand, Zoe held on to my shoulder while I pressed our twined hands against my chest. Banding an arm around her waist, I mashed our bodies even closer together.
Holding a woman had never felt so amazing before. She was soft, so incredibly soft. The subtle smell of apples teased my senses again, only this time I did shut my eyes and inhale deeply. We swayed together while the band sang of seeing someone’s true colors and still loving them regardless.
I wanted to see all of her colors laid bare almost as much as I needed to show her mine. She’d crawled so deep under my skin, there was no way to get her out. Not that I wanted to. It was sudden and unexpected, but Zoe Carlisle was everything I never knew I needed. I didn’t care how hard I had to fight to make her see it and feel it.
A groan blew over my lips when the ending of the song led into something more upbeat. Reluctantly, I released Zoe from my arms only to find her staring up at me. Man, she was absolutely breathtakingly gorgeous. That look in her eyes was enough to make any man weak at the knees.
“I love how full of expression your eyes are,” I swallowed hard. “They reflect everything you’re feeling. Like now, you really want me to kiss you but at the same time you’re terrified I’ll actually do it.” Bringing my hand up to cradle her face, I ran a thumb over her cheek. “This is on you, sunshine. You decide.” As much as I wanted to taste her sweet lips, it was more important that she knew she was in control.

The sound of my office door clicking shut had me looking up from the report I was reading over. Confusion pulled my brows together as Zoe strolled toward my desk, looking insanely sexy in a pair of black tights and white t-shirt. It wasn’t hard to miss the black bra hiding beneath the cotton either.
The closer she came, the louder my heart began to thud. What the hell was she doing here? I opened my mouth to ask her as much, but to my horror, no sound came. This was beyond ridiculous, I was a grown-ass man, I’d been with women before, so why did this one turn me into a gawking idiot?
“Morning, Sheriff.” The way my title rolled off her tongue had my body heating up and my blood rushing south.
Clearing my throat, I shifted in my seat. “Morning.”
One side of her sinfully luscious mouth lifted into a smile. My eyes zeroed in on her index finger trailing along the opposite side of my desk. “What brings you here?” If I heard the strain in my voice, she probably did too.
As she rounded my desk, my heart went into overdrive, its frantic rhythm thundering in my ears. Oblivious to the way she was affecting me, Zoe sauntered even closer. She was so tantalizing close, I could just reach forward, curl my fingers around her wrist and yank her on to my lap. Not acting on that impulse was almost impossible. Almost.
“You and I have unfinished business.” Her voice was as sweet as honey. I wonder if it will still sound as sweet when she cries out my name while I — Shit! I needed to get a grip on my thoughts.
In an attempt to seem relaxed, I rested my arms against the armrest and leaned back in my chair. “We do? I wasn’t aware.”
My eyes widened when Zoe parked her ass on the desk in front of me, she pulled her lips into a pout that had me thinking all sorts of things. “Ah, come now, Eli.”
She was close, too damn close. I needed space, I needed to breathe. Scooting my chair back, I pushed to my feet, but Zoe was faster. Before I even had time to react, we were toe-to-toe, the warmth of her palms pressed against my chest searing me through the fabric of my shirt.
With every bat of her lashes, she was stealing my sanity, so much so that I felt my resolve slip. I brought my hands up with the intent to push her away, instead, I shoved my fingers into her hair. Unable to stop myself, I slowly and purposefully lowered my mouth to hers.
When our lips were just a breath apart, Zoe reached up and held my face in her palms. “Eli,” my name fell from her lips in a whispered plea. My gaze snapped to hers, the same plea shining in her eyes. “Eli,” she said again, firmer this time. “You have to save me.”
